Every time I speculate about the process behind a TV show, I forget that there are people around here who can pretty much just send a text message and find out the answer. (Remember this and this?)

So I guess we can conclude that yes, NBC is run by a bunch of Puritanical cowards, but also yes, the Office writers were looking for a way to snatch funny from the jaws of stupid. (I still want to move to France, though. I’ve heard some encouraging things about the ladies and the amount of pants they wear.)
