Followup re: boobz

A few people have replied to my last post suggesting that the pixelation was part of the joke, since The Office is shot in mockumentary style, so it’s plausible that the fake production company behind the fake documentary are the ones we’re to believe inserted the pixelation, and I’m not postmodern enough to get that.

Maybe. But I don’t think so, and here’s why:

That framegrab is from slightly earlier in the episode: the big reveal that Michael has been sticking cocks and boobs to every object to indicate gender (he’s learning Spanish).

But because of the pixelation, the joke doesn’t read. That’s why I think it wasn’t originally written that way: if it had been, it would be done with more finesse. As executed, though, the two drawings just look the same. The writers of The Office are too good to let a subtle highbrow meta-joke derail a good old-fashioned cock-n-boobs.

I will say this, though: I love that a mainstream American sitcom is sophisticated enough to inspire a discussion about postmodernism. And cocks and boobs.
