Tough love time

You guys are my world, my sun, my stars. But some of you are committing an act which can only rightly be called abuse, and it would be wrong of me to let it continue.

You are using the adjective “everyday” (which means “ordinary”) when you mean to use the adverb phrase “every day” (which means “daily”). You must stop this immediately.

Consider by way of an object lesson this correspondence between a former English teacher and the Coca-Cola Company regarding the latter’s choice of the grammatically appalling slogan “Treat yourself well. Everyday” for Dasani mineral water:

Your slogan may as well read “Treat yourself well. Ordinary,” or “Treat yourself well. Commonplace,” because that is what it means, given the error.

Are we then to assume that poor grammar and abuse of the English language make for more effective marketing? If this is the case I have a couple of suggestions for future slogans you may wish to consider:

“Coke. Its the real thing.”
“All ways Coca-Cola.”
“Coke add’s life.”

Ladies and gentlemen, I implore you: pay attention to your writing and be better than Coke.

Every day.
