King Crimson, “Discipline” (from Discipline, 1981) 05:13

You might not notice this at first because they’re so damn good, but one thing that makes this song special is that for most of it, the two guitarists (Robert Fripp and Adrian Belew) are alternating notes. It’s the concept of “duet” taken to its logical extreme.

I saw Belew’s solo show in San Francisco in 1999 or so. Out of nowhere, he started playing this insane song, but only his part. Every other note. For a minute or so you couldn’t tell what he was doing, but eventually the crowd figured it out and went nuts.

He thanked us and said, “Robert must be rolling over in his bed.”
