This is completely awesome:

Weeds is a great show, but it has an understanding of technology befitting a 1980s sitcom. Over five seasons we’ve seen:
- A Nintendo DS that needed new batteries
- A manual breast pump that required electricity (they even added foley of its nonexistent motor giving out)
- A guy who could singlehandedly tap a phone call using nothing but a laptop
[…]
I heard back from my Weeds writer friend (I don’t dwineman follows me, so could someone direct him to this, please?)
“That’s hilarious. I tend to agree with the blog writer. Unfortunately, these things are out of my control. How the actor wants to hold the phone, what odd sound effects they put in at the end… sigh. Though some of the effects are for proprietary reasons… we’re not allowed to use original sounds, etc etc. And the breast pump, oh man. That was my episode and it was a whole thing. I tried to talk Mary-Louise out of using that pump and pretending it was batteries dying, but she “saw it” a very particular way. C’est la vie. I try not to worry about these things and pray people give us some dramatic license.”
How totally cool. I love it that I can post an amusing observation about a TV show and a little while later get a first-hand account of how and why it happened from the writer of the episode. I’m awed and humbled. Thanks, kaffeineme.
